Experience April 25 between Memory and Land Discovery
April 25 in Emilia-Romagna is no ordinary date. It is a sensation that vibrates in the air, a “breath” that makes its way through the meshes of history and the beauty of nature being reborn. For Togoloco, celebrating this day means honoring those who fought for our right to walk free, combining dutiful remembrance with conscious discovery of the land.
We don’t propose a simple out-of-town trip, but an experience of awareness. We have selected three routes that weave the threads of collective memory with moments of pure wonder, amid art, architecture and breathtaking landscapes.
1. Roots and Imagination: from Casa Cervi to the Labyrinth of the Masone
In this itinerary between the provinces of Reggio Emilia and Parma, freedom manifests itself first as a social achievement and then as an inner exploration.
Memory: the Casa Cervi Museum (Gattatico, Reggio Emilia) Your day begins in a place where history has the scent of the earth. Casa Cervi is a universal symbol of peasant resistance. Here, the Cervi family chose to take sides, paying the highest price for their ideals of justice and freedom. To visit this place is to immerse yourself in a history of courage and culture. Do you remember when we talked about it? Find an in-depth discussion in our March article dedicated to the figure of Genoeffa Cervi. Walk through the park, observe the fields surrounding the estate and be touched by the strength of this legacy.
The Experience: the Labyrinth of the Masone (Fontanellato, Parma) A short distance away, the register changes. Move on to Fontanellato to enter the world’s largest bamboo labyrinth, created by the genius of Franco Maria Ricci. If at Casa Cervi you reflected on conquered freedom, here you experience freedom of the mind. Getting lost among the tall green stalks is an invitation to slow down, relinquish control and let curiosity guide you. At the center of the labyrinth, art and architecture welcome you into an embrace of timeless beauty.
2. Crinale trails: from the silence of Monte Sole to the magic of Rocchetta.
In the hills of Bologna, History becomes solemn and human ingenuity defies all convention.
Memory: Monte Sole Regional Historical Park (Marzabotto, Bologna) Go up along the ridges between the Reno and Setta rivers. This is where the “Bicycle Route of Remembrance” runs, a route that passes through the sites of the Marzabotto massacre. Walking or cycling among the remains of the church of Casaglia or the village of Caprara is not just a physical exercise. It is an act of respect. The silence of these valleys speaks more than a thousand words, reminding us of the value of peace. The view sweeping over the Apennines will restore your sense of vastness and deep gratitude.
Experience: Rocchetta Mattei (Grizzana Morandi, Bologna) After the solemnity of Monte Sole, be enchanted by a place that seems to have come out of a dream. Rocchetta Mattei is a labyrinth of staircases, Moorish courtyards and esoteric rooms. It is the exaltation of the creative freedom of Count Cesare Mattei, who built this castle without following any traditional architectural rules. It is the perfect place to remind us that freedom is also the ability to imagine new and extravagant worlds.
3. Steps in Time: the Gothic Line and the Sassi di Roccamalatina
An itinerary dedicated to those who love visceral contact with nature and slow trekking, perfect even if you are traveling with your four-legged friends.
Memory: The Paths of the Gothic Line (Montese, Modena) The Modena Apennines hold the scars of history. The paths that were once border lines and trenches during World War II are now paths immersed in greenery. To walk here, among chestnut forests and small stone villages, is to retrace the steps of those who dreamed of liberation. Each memorial stone along the way is an invitation to pause and reflect, in an environment where nature has gently reclaimed its space.
The Experience: Sassi di Roccamalatina Regional Park (Guiglia, Modena) End your journey in front of the towering arenaceous spires of the Sassi. Here freedom is physical: it is the gaze that runs to the horizon, it is the richness of a biodiversity that explodes in spring. Explore the paths that surround these thousand-year-old rocks, listen to the call of the peregrine falcons and enjoy the wide breath of a land that welcomes you without boundaries. It is the very essence of Emilia-Romagna: a perfect mix of geological strength and scenic sweetness.
4. Horizons of Water and Land: from the Battle of the Senio to the Comacchio Valleys.
From Emilia to Romagna. In this corner of the region, April 25 has the taste of salt and the tenacity of those who struggled through mud and reeds.
Memory: Museum of the Battle of the Senio (Alfonsine, Ravenna) Alfonsine is a symbolic place. Here, along the line of the Senio River, one of the bloodiest phases of the Liberation was fought. To visit the town museum is to understand the “Position War” and the heroism of the partisan groups and local people who saw their territory almost completely destroyed. Walking along the riverbanks today, in a silence broken only by the wind, will make you feel the weight of that freedom we take for granted today, born among these very lands of reclamation.
The Experience: Sailing in the Comacchio Valleys (Ferrara) After honoring history, let the water lull you. Move on to the Comacchio Valleys for a boat trip among the canals and fishing “casoni.” Here freedom is horizontal: your gaze is lost between the sky and the body of water, where pink flamingos have found their home. It is an experience of deep natural connection, where time seems to stand still. It is the perfect place to reflect on the resilience of nature and man, while enjoying a sunset that lights up the horizon with infinite hues.
5. Stones of Defense and Romagnolo Heart: between Montegridolfo and Santarcangelo
Along the southern border of the region, the Gothic Line left indelible traces on villages of rare beauty.
Memory: Gothic Line Museum (Montegridolfo, Rimini) Montegridolfo is a perfectly preserved Malatesta village, but its strategic location made it a focal point of the Gothic Line. The local museum holds artifacts, documents and evidence of the clash between the armies that faced each other here in September 1944. Entering this small museum, housed in a former bomb shelter, will allow you to “touch” history up close. You will feel the strength of the walls that protected the lives and determination of those who did not surrender in the face of occupation.
The Experience: The Caves and Inclusive Art of Santarcangelo di Romagna (Rimini) Head down to the coast to discover the vibrant soul of Santarcangelo. Beneath its cobblestone streets lies a magical world: the tuffaceous caves. An underground labyrinth that was a refuge for thousands of people during the war and is now a fascinating journey into the belly of the earth. Once resurfaced, stroll among the historic stores or visit “Mutonia,” a unique art park created by a community of artists who turn waste into works of art. It is the epitome of creative freedom and inclusiveness, a place where all diversity becomes beauty.
