Explore the Casentino Forests with Your Dog
Seeing your dog happy is one of life’s simplest and most powerful joys. Forget the scorching asphalt and small city parks: spring is the perfect time to let your four-legged friend breathe in the fresh air of the Apennines.
Today we’re taking you to the Casentinesi Forests, Monte Falterona, and Campigna National Park, a boundless expanse of greenery straddling the border between Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. A magical place, featuring ancient forests designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, thundering waterfalls, and enchanting trails.
But be careful: hiking in a national park isn’t like taking a stroll through the city. It’s an immersion into a “home” inhabited by wolves, deer, and roe deer. That’s why respect is essential. Here’s our practical and inspiring guide to enjoying the perfect hike with your dog, in complete safety.
1. The Golden Rules: Why a Leash Is an Act of Love
The first thing to know is that leashes are always required in the National Park. And no, this isn’t an annoying restriction, but a crucial step to protect three incredibly precious things: nature, wildlife, and, above all, your dog.
Your dog’s exceptional sense of smell could lead him to pick up the scent of a wild animal. In the woods, an off-leash dog can scare fawns, disturb local wildlife, or—worse yet—come face-to-face with a wolf (which instinctively protects its territory). Keeping your dog on a leash allows him to enjoy the outdoors without stress or danger.
Off-limits areas. There are certain areas of the park, known as Strict Nature Reserves (such as the very famous Sasso Fratino Reserve), where entry is strictly prohibited for both people and dogs, even if they’re on a leash. This is nature’s way of protecting its most vulnerable creatures. Always check the maps at the visitor centers before you set out!
1. The Ridracoli Dam Nature Trail (Forlì-Cesena)
An easy, scenic route that’s perfect if your dog loves the water. Walking along the turquoise Ridracoli reservoir is a relaxing experience. If you make a reservation, many of the electric boats that cruise the lake allow dogs on board
2. The Acquacheta Trails (Forlì-Cesena)
Want to let your dog experience the scent of the “Divine Comedy”? Start from the village of San Benedetto in Alpe and follow the stream to the Acquacheta Waterfall (as described by Dante Alighieri). The trail is cool and shaded, and the stream’s water is a blessing for hot paws.
3. The beech forests of Bagno di Romagna (Forlì-Cesena)
In the area around Bagno di Romagna, there are wide, well-marked trails, such as the Gnome Trail (ideal if you’re traveling with children and a dog) or the trails leading to Pietrapazza. The shade provided by the centuries-old beech trees keeps the temperature cool even on the sunniest days.
What to Pack in Your Backpack (for You and Fido)
Trekking preparation starts at home. Here’s what your adventure companion can’t do without:
- H-shaped harness and long leash: The harness distributes the weight, and the leash (perhaps 3 meters long, but shortenable as needed) gives the dog room to explore without breaking the rules.
- Plenty of water and a collapsible bowl: There aren’t always clean springs in the woods. Staying hydrated is vital.
- Poop bags: Well, yes, you have to pick them up even in the woods! Dog feces can transmit pathogens to wildlife. Always pick up after your dog.
- Microfiber towel: a must-have if your dog decides that mud is the best spa in the world.
- Tick Remover: Prevention comes first (make sure you’ve applied tick repellent), but a check at the end of your walk is a must.
